NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID. POLO: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Volkswagen Polo has gone electric – and after years of waiting, the new ID. Polo is finally on sale in Britain.

This is a hugely important car for Volkswagen.

The Polo has been one of the best-known small cars in Britain for decades, and now Volkswagen is taking that familiar formula and turning it into a fully electric hatchback.

But this isn't simply an electric Polo with a different badge.

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo sits on Volkswagen's latest version of its MEB electric platform, gets a new front-wheel-drive system, two battery options, up to 281 miles of WLTP range, and a starting price of £23,945 for the current UK Launch Edition.

And Volkswagen has another trick up its sleeve.

A GTI version is coming, with 226 PS.

So let's take a proper look at everything you need to know about the new ID. Polo.

HOW MUCH DOES THE NEW ID. POLO COST?

Let's get straight to the number everybody wants to know.

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo is now available to order in the UK.

Volkswagen UK currently lists the ID. Polo Life Launch Edition from £25,555 on the road.

That is the actual UK price – not an estimate.

And there's an important point about the Government's Electric Car Grant.

Qualifying ID. Polo versions are currently eligible for the £1,500 Band 2 grant, provided the vehicle meets the Government's eligibility requirements, including the relevant purchase-price threshold. Volkswagen says the grant is automatically deducted from the retail invoice on qualifying cars.

So, depending on the exact version and options chosen, the effective price can be lower than the advertised RRP.

However, we would always recommend checking the final price with a Volkswagen retailer because the grant rules and vehicle eligibility can change.

THERE ARE TWO BATTERIES

This is where things get interesting.

The ID. Polo is available with two battery sizes.

37kWh LFP

The entry-level battery has a 37kWh net capacity and uses lithium iron phosphate – LFP – chemistry.

Volkswagen quotes a maximum range of around 204 miles WLTP for the UK-specification car.

The smaller battery is aimed at keeping the ID. Polo affordable while still giving it enough range for everyday driving.

52kWh NMC

Then there's the larger 52kWh net battery.

This uses nickel-manganese-cobalt – NMC – chemistry and increases the official range to around 281 miles WLTP.

That's the version we'd expect many buyers to be interested in.

Volkswagen's own technical information gives the larger battery a maximum European range of 454km, which converts to approximately 282 miles. UK publications are quoting around 281–282 miles depending on the precise specification.

So, in simple terms:

37kWh – around 204 miles

52kWh – around 281 miles

That's a very respectable range for a small electric hatchback.

CHARGING

The ID. Polo supports 11kW AC charging, so if you have a suitable home wallbox, overnight charging is straightforward.

But DC rapid charging is where the two batteries differ.

The 37kWh version can charge at up to 90kW.

Volkswagen quotes roughly 23–27 minutes for a 10–80% charge, depending on the specification and source/test conditions.

The larger 52kWh battery increases the maximum DC charging rate to 105kW.

Volkswagen quotes approximately 24 minutes for 10–80% on the larger battery.

So although the 52kWh battery is considerably larger, it doesn't take dramatically longer to charge from 10 to 80%.

That's exactly what you want from a modern EV.

HOW POWERFUL IS THE ID. POLO?

Volkswagen has designed a completely new electric motor for the car.

It's called the APP290.

And there will eventually be several different power outputs.

For the regular ID. Polo range, Volkswagen has announced:

85kW – 116 PS

99kW – 135 PS

155kW – 211 PS

And then there's the exciting one.

THE ID. POLO GTI IS COMING

Yes – Volkswagen is bringing the GTI badge to the electric Polo.

The ID. Polo GTI will produce 166kW – equivalent to 226 PS.

Volkswagen says the GTI will follow during 2027.

And this could be a very interesting car indeed.

The traditional Polo GTI has always been about giving you hot-hatch performance without the size and expense of something like a Golf GTI.

An electric Polo GTI with 226 PS could be seriously entertaining.

We don't yet have all the final UK pricing and specification details for the GTI, so we're not going to make up numbers that Volkswagen hasn't confirmed.

IT'S FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE

Here's something quite important about the ID. Polo.

Unlike many of Volkswagen's existing ID models, the new car uses front-wheel drive.

Volkswagen has developed a new electric front-drive system specifically for its smaller MEB+ models.

Why?

Because it saves weight, reduces complexity and frees up space at the rear of the car.

And that has a direct benefit for practicality.

THE BOOT IS BIGGER THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT

Despite being a small hatchback, the ID. Polo has a 441-litre boot with five people on board.

That's a very useful figure.

In fact, Volkswagen specifically points to the front-wheel-drive layout and slim rear axle as major reasons why it has been able to achieve that boot capacity.

Fold the rear seats down and the available load space increases substantially.

So while the ID. Polo is relatively compact from the outside, Volkswagen hasn't forgotten that small-car buyers still need practicality.

IT'S NOT ACTUALLY THAT SMALL

The ID. Polo measures approximately:

Length: 4,053mm

Width: 1,816mm

Height: 1,530mm

That makes it slightly larger in some dimensions than the petrol Polo many people will be familiar with.

And that extra size is being used to improve interior space.

The car is designed to give passengers more room without becoming a huge vehicle.

THE DESIGN

Volkswagen has deliberately tried to make the ID. Polo look like a proper Polo.

That's important.

The company has moved away from some of the more radical styling of its earlier ID models and created something that looks much more familiar.

You've got the traditional compact hatchback proportions.

But there are some obvious electric-car clues.

There's a closed-off front grille, slimmer lighting, aerodynamic detailing and a full-width light signature.

The design also features a number of references to the classic Polo.

Volkswagen calls this approach "Love Brand" design – essentially taking familiar Volkswagen design cues and bringing them into the electric era.

And we think it works.

The ID. Polo doesn't scream:

"LOOK AT ME, I'M AN ELECTRIC CAR!"

Instead, it looks like a modern Volkswagen.

INSIDE THE ID. POLO

Inside, Volkswagen has also taken a different approach to some of its earlier ID models.

The dashboard is much more conventional and driver-focused.

There's a central infotainment screen and a digital driver's display.

The interior is designed around a combination of physical controls and touchscreen technology rather than putting absolutely everything into a screen.

That's potentially good news.

Volkswagen received plenty of criticism for its early ID models because some of the controls could be frustrating to use.

The ID. Polo is intended to be much more intuitive.

TECHNOLOGY

The ID. Polo gets Volkswagen's latest software and connectivity features.

Depending on specification, you'll find things such as:

  • Navigation

  • Smartphone integration

  • Wireless charging

  • Digital cockpit

  • Parking sensors

  • Rear-view camera

  • Driver assistance systems

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Travel Assist

  • Lane assistance

Higher-specification cars add more premium features, including upgraded lighting and interior equipment.

The exact equipment depends on the trim level.

LIFE AND STYLE

The UK range is built around Life and Style specifications, alongside Launch Edition versions.

The entry-level Life is designed to keep the price down while still offering a good amount of equipment.

Volkswagen UK lists features including 17-inch alloy wheels, high-beam assist, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, wireless phone charging and black exterior details on the Life specification.

Move up to Style and things get more luxurious.

You can get 18-inch wheels, Matrix LED headlights, the full-width light bar, ambient lighting, navigation, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, alongside two-zone climate control.

And that is where the price starts to climb.

WHAT ABOUT RANGE IN THE REAL WORLD?

Now, this is important.

When Volkswagen says 204 miles or 281 miles, those are WLTP figures.

You should not expect to drive 281 miles at 70mph on the motorway in winter.

As with every EV, real-world range will depend on:

  • Temperature

  • Speed

  • Heating and air conditioning

  • Wheel size

  • Driving style

  • Traffic

  • Terrain

The 52kWh car's official figure is excellent for a small EV, but motorway drivers should expect considerably less than the headline WLTP figure.

The smaller 37kWh battery is also more suited to urban and shorter-distance driving.

For people with regular long motorway journeys, we'd definitely recommend paying extra for the 52kWh version.

IS IT CHEAPER THAN THE RENAULT 5?

This is where things get interesting.

The ID. Polo is entering a very competitive part of the electric-car market.

The Renault 5 has already established itself as one of the most attractive small EVs around, while the Cupra Raval, Hyundai Inster, Kia EV2 and other affordable EVs are all fighting for the same customers.

The ID. Polo's UK starting price of £23,945 currently puts it above the cheapest Renault 5 versions.

But Volkswagen is offering a familiar brand, a practical 441-litre boot and up to 281 miles of range.

And with the £1,500 Electric Car Grant available on qualifying versions, the price equation becomes more interesting.

IS THE ID. POLO REALLY A POLO?

Technically, no.

This isn't simply the existing petrol Polo converted to electric power.

It's a new electric car using Volkswagen's MEB+ architecture.

The platform has been developed specifically to reduce weight and cost while making the car more efficient.

Volkswagen says the ID. Polo can weigh from approximately 1,568kg, depending on configuration.

That is relatively light by modern EV standards.

And that's important because keeping an electric car light helps everything:

Range.

Performance.

Efficiency.

Handling.

Tyre wear.

It's one of the reasons this new generation of smaller EVs is so interesting.

WHAT ABOUT THE ID. POLO GTI?

This deserves its own section.

The ID. Polo GTI will arrive in 2027 with 226 PS.

Volkswagen hasn't yet released every UK specification detail, so we're going to wait for the official announcement before judging its price or exact performance figures.

But the ingredients are certainly interesting.

Small electric hatchback.

Front-wheel drive.

226 PS.

GTI badge.

Instant electric torque.

This could become one of the most entertaining affordable electric cars on the market.

And perhaps even more importantly, it shows that Volkswagen doesn't see electric cars purely as appliances.

The GTI badge is being carried into the EV era.

It's compact.

It's practical.

It looks familiar.

It has a decent amount of technology.

And most importantly, it's becoming affordable.

The 37kWh car at £23,945 isn't the cheapest EV on the market, but the 52kWh version with up to around 281 miles of range starts to look much more interesting.

The big question is how much the larger battery adds to the price.

Because if Volkswagen can keep that version reasonably affordable, the ID. Polo could become one of the strongest mainstream small EVs in Britain.
