The Electric Estate That Finally Nails Long-Distance Driving?

The electric estate car market is still relatively small, but Volkswagen is hoping to change that with the new Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer. Combining impressive practicality, premium comfort, and one of the longest driving ranges available in any EV, the ID.7 Tourer could be the ideal family car for drivers who aren’t quite ready to jump into an SUV.

After spending time behind the wheel on UK roads, we came away genuinely impressed. Here’s everything you need to know.

A Proper Long-Range EV

The headline feature of the ID.7 Tourer is undoubtedly its range.

Our test car featured Volkswagen’s larger 86kWh battery, delivering a claimed range of up to 424 miles. In a world where range anxiety still puts some buyers off electric vehicles, that’s a seriously impressive figure.

To put that into perspective, there are very few electric estates capable of travelling over 400 miles on a charge. Even premium rivals costing significantly more struggle to match it.

Prices start from around £52,000, while our well-specced test car came in at just over £60,000 thanks to several optional extras.

Comfortable, Refined and Built for UK Roads

The first thing you notice when driving the ID.7 Tourer is just how comfortable it feels.

Visibility is excellent thanks to the clean dashboard design, while Volkswagen’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) allows drivers to tailor the suspension setup to their liking. Remarkably, there are 15 levels of adjustment available, allowing you to fine-tune the balance between comfort and sportiness.

Even on rough British roads, the ID.7 remains composed. Potholes and broken surfaces are absorbed with ease, making it a superb motorway cruiser and family car.

Switch into Sport mode and the car feels noticeably sharper. While it won’t pin you to your seat like some high-performance EVs, the instant electric torque provides plenty of punch when overtaking.

The 0-62mph sprint takes just 6.7 seconds, which is more than enough for an estate car focused on comfort and practicality.

Huge Boot Space

Estate buyers care about practicality, and the ID.7 Tourer certainly delivers.

With the rear seats in place, boot capacity stands at 605 litres. Fold the seats down and that expands to a massive 1,714 litres.

Volkswagen has also included a useful adjustable boot floor, storage compartments for charging cables, side pockets, and additional hidden storage beneath the floor.

Whether you’re loading up for a family holiday, carrying sports equipment, or simply tackling the weekly supermarket run, there’s very little this boot can’t handle.

Fast Charging Capabilities

Long range is great, but charging speed matters too.

The ID.7 Tourer supports DC rapid charging at up to 200kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in approximately 26 minutes under ideal conditions.

Home charging is equally straightforward. Using an 11kW wallbox, a full charge takes around eight hours, making overnight charging easy for most owners.

Executive Looks Without Being Flashy

Volkswagen has taken a fairly understated approach to the styling, and we think that’s one of the ID.7 Tourer’s strengths.

Rather than trying to look futuristic or aggressive, it adopts a clean, executive appearance that should appeal to a wide audience.

The rear light bar looks particularly impressive at night, especially when paired with the optional illuminated Volkswagen badges. The sleek profile, stylish alloy wheels and subtle body detailing help give the car a premium feel without shouting about it.

It’s one of those cars that gets better the more you look at it.

Interior Technology Done Right

Step inside and you’re greeted by a large 15-inch infotainment display that dominates the dashboard.

The latest Volkswagen software feels significantly improved compared with earlier ID models. Menus are responsive, graphics are sharp, and navigating the system is generally straightforward.

While we’d still prefer physical climate controls rather than touch-sensitive shortcuts, Volkswagen has at least included useful shortcuts for features such as heated seats.

Material quality throughout the cabin is excellent. Soft-touch surfaces, suede-effect trim, quality stitching and clever ambient lighting help create a genuinely premium environment.

One particularly clever feature is the dashboard trim, where ambient lighting shines through thousands of tiny perforations to create a striking effect after dark.

The Party Piece: Smart Panoramic Roof

One of the standout optional extras is Volkswagen’s panoramic glass roof.

Rather than using a conventional blind, the glass can switch electronically between clear and opaque at the touch of a button.

It’s a genuinely impressive piece of technology that adds a sense of occasion to the cabin while also helping regulate light and heat on sunny days.

Combined with the illuminated badges and DCC suspension, it’s included as part of a package costing around £2,100.

Rear Seat Comfort

Passengers in the back are well catered for.

Legroom is generous, headroom is excellent, and visibility is far better than many modern SUVs and coupes. Rear occupants also benefit from climate controls, heated seats, USB-C charging ports, cupholders and a useful ski hatch.

The cabin remains impressively quiet at speed, making longer journeys particularly relaxing.

A Few Things We Didn’t Like

The ID.7 Tourer isn’t perfect.

Volkswagen’s unusual window switch setup remains frustrating. Instead of having four dedicated window switches, drivers must press a separate button to toggle between front and rear windows.

It feels unnecessarily complicated and somewhat out of place in a car costing over £50,000.

We were also disappointed by the quality of the reversing camera. While functional, the image lacks the sharpness and clarity we’d expect at this price point. Several cheaper competitors now offer superior camera systems.

Lease Deals Could Make It a Bargain

One area where the ID.7 Tourer becomes particularly interesting is leasing.

At the time of filming, examples were available from around £262 per month with an initial rental of approximately £2,500 and a 5,000-mile annual allowance.

Deals will vary, but if similar offers remain available, the ID.7 Tourer represents exceptional value considering its range, technology and practicality.

Verdict: One of the Best Electric Estates on Sale

The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer surprised us.

It combines class-leading range, excellent comfort, huge practicality and a genuinely premium feel into one very appealing package. While there are a few frustrations with the controls and camera quality, they’re minor complaints in an otherwise impressive car.

For families, company car drivers, or anyone wanting a long-range EV without moving into SUV territory, the ID.7 Tourer deserves a place near the very top of your shortlist.
